Amethyst Non-Alcoholic Spirits Review

A review of one of my favorite sugar-free, non-alcoholic spirit lineups

One of the biggest complaints I often hear is that mocktails are “all sugar and juice” or “too sweet.” And I can’t argue. A lot of drinks I see online or at restaurants are often a combination of grenadine, sugary sodas and juices labeled a mocktail with a $15 price tag on it. The last thing I want to do is replace my alcohol intake with sugar, so I’m always on the hunt for excellent, healthy alternatives to cocktails. On that note, I'm excited to introduce you to one of my favorite low-calorie, sugar-free lineups: Amethyst Botanical Spirits.

Amethyst Nonalcoholic Spirits
Amethyst Non-Alcoholic Spirits

Who is Amethyst Non-Alcoholic Spirits?

Amethyst was started by two brothers in South Carolina who also happen to own a successful craft whiskey distillery. Recognizing that a large percentage of the population chooses not to drink, they wanted to create non-alcoholic spirits with the same quality, taste and experience, which was how Amethyst was born in 2021. The spirits are made from highly distilled water infused with botanical extracts, then filtered twice to deliver an exceptional taste, void of any chemical/plastic-y undertones that many non-alcoholic spirits have.

I discovered the brand in January 2023 and was blown away by the bright flavors, sharp burn and clean ingredients (you can see my first reaction to the Grapefruit Basil on an Instagram video here). They deliberately don’t compare their spirits to any other category (such as gin, tequila, etc.), but if you’re trying to wrap your head around what exactly this bottle is capable of, in my opinion it’s most similar to a flavored vodka. They are incredibly versatile, easy to work with at home, and luckily for us they recently released a new flavor that will blow your socks off. I figured it was the perfect time to review all the Amethyst Botanical Spirits, so let’s go!

Amethyst Watermelon Lime

Introducing Amethyst Watermelon Lime

On the nose you immediately pick up sweet lime and watermelon, which carries over to the first sip. Despite this being a zero-sugar spirit it has a delicious sweetness, almost candy-like, followed by an intense burn in the back of your throat. I’m guessing from capsicum, but the natural flavorings of each bottle are not disclosed. The burn is quite intense when sipped neat, and perfect when served with a little soda on the rocks. I love how simple it is to use these spirits to create delicious zero-proof cocktails, whether you just want to combine the with soda or spend a few minutes crafting something more unique. Other fun ideas that this would be perfect for are a watermelon mojito, watermelon margarita, or watermelon cosmo.

Amethyst Serrano Cucumber Lemon

I hate to pick favorites, but this is probably mine out of the lot. The citrus and cucumber are so refreshing and smooth on the front, with the heat of the Serrano pepper hitting perfectly on the back. It’s a great alternative for a nonalcoholic margarita, or delicious simply mixed with soda, tonic or a little ginger beer. You can watch me make a zero-proof cocktail with this one on Instagram.

Amethyst Grapefruit Basil

I love the smooth mouthfeel of all the Amethyst spirits, and this one is no different. Citrus and herbaceous, notes of grapefruit and basil blend perfectly without any artificial taste. This one also has a nice kick on the finish that helps emulate the burn of alcohol.

Amethyst Blueberry Ginger Mint

Blueberry Ginger Mint is a subtly sweet non-alcoholic spirit with a nice blend of herbaceous mint and spicy ginger notes. Mixed with nonalcoholic sparkling wine and you’re transported to a hammock on the beach.
