The First 30 Days of Cutting Back: What Helped Me Most

Six simple habits that helped me cut back and made the first month feel doable.
If you're thinking about drinking less but aren't sure where to start, you're not alone. When I first decided to cut back, I wasn't trying to quit forever or completely overhaul my life. I just knew I was tired of feeling tired, anxious, and stuck in the same ol' routine of pouring a glass (ok three) of wine, sleeping like crap and waking up disappointed in myself. If you're here, perhaps you're ready for a change too and that is incredible.

What surprised me most was how much changed in those first 30 days. Actually even within the first 10 days my sleep improved, my energy came back, and I started feeling more present in my everyday life.
The first month can feel intimidating, but it doesn't have to be complicated. Here are six things that helped me most when I was getting started.
1. Focus on One Day at a Time
When I first started cutting back, thinking about "forever" felt impossible. So I stopped worrying about forever.
Instead, I focused on making the next good decision, just for today. Could I skip alcohol tonight? Could I make it through this weekend? Could I try one social event without drinking?
Breaking the process into smaller milestones made it feel manageable and helped me build confidence along the way.
2. Create a New Evening Routine
One of the biggest surprises was realizing that I didn't just miss the alcohol, I missed the ritual.
I missed having something to look forward to at the end of the day.
That's why finding replacements was so important. Sometimes it was a mocktail, a sparkling water in a fancy glass, an evening walk, or simply sitting down with a good book once the bedtime routine is done.
The goal wasn't to deprive myself. It was to create new habits that still felt enjoyable. I know it's hard to imagine an evening without the beloved wine, but think of each day as a building block on top of the day before. Soon those evening cravings will diminish and you'll love your peaceful nights and bright mornings.
3. Prioritize Food, Movement, and Sleep
The better I took care of myself, the less I wanted to drink.
Simple things like eating balanced meals, staying hydrated, going for a walk, or getting to bed earlier made a huge difference in how I felt physically and emotionally.
When we're tired, stressed, hungry, or overwhelmed, it's much harder to make intentional choices. Supporting your body during those first few weeks can make the process feel so much easier. Lean on the meal plans, mocktail recipes and tracking in the app daily.
4. Track Your Progress
One of the most motivating things I did was keep track of my wins.
Not just the days I didn't drink, but how I felt.
Was I sleeping better? Did I have more energy? Was my mood improving?
Those small changes added up quickly and became powerful reminders of why I started in the first place.
That's one of the reasons I'm so excited about the RECLAIM app. I wanted to create a place where women could access practical tools, resources, and guidance to support their health goals—not just around drinking less, but around feeling their best overall.
Inside the app, you'll find workout recommendations, meal-planning support, healthy habits, and other resources designed to help you build a lifestyle that feels good and sustainable.

5. Give Yourself Something Positive to Work Toward
Cutting back became much easier when I stopped focusing on what I was giving up and started focusing on what I was gaining.
Maybe that's improving your fitness, having more energy for your family, building strength, or simply feeling more like yourself again.
Having a goal gave me something to move toward instead of something to avoid. Cutting back became much easier when I stopped focusing on what I was giving up and started focusing on what I was gaining.
6. Community and Letting Go of Shame
I often wondered if any of my friends also woke up the next day with a raging headache and regret for the night before. Turns out they did, and I wasn't alone in my journey. But I felt too much shame to talk to anyone about it. If you can relate, I want you to know you're not alone.
Check out the Community tab in the app for journal prompts and to chat with likeminded women also focused on cutting back and feeling their best. We share our wins, our losses and everything in between. Connecting with others helped me let go of my secret shame and build my confidence.
Finally, Respect Yourself and Your Process
The first 30 days aren't about being perfect. They're about learning what works for you.
Some days will feel easy. Others won't. There may be setbacks along the way, and that's okay.
Every day is a new opportunity to start again with a little more experience and a little more confidence than the day before.
If you're ready to drink less and feel better, start small. Focus on today. Celebrate your progress and you might be surprised by how much can change in just 30 days. You should feel so damn proud of yourself for being here, and I'm in your corner rooting for you!
